Joao Palhinha scored a stunning equaliser as Fulham held Brighton and Hove Albion to a 1-1 draw at the Amex Stadium EFL
The Seagulls were the EFL better team in the early stages and were rewarded through Evan Ferguson’s neat finish before Palhinha’s superb strike secured a point for the Londoners EFL
The result extended Brighton’s winless run to three as they rued missed chances in front of goal EFL
Roberto De Zerbi’s side showed little signs of fatigue following Thursday’s 2-0 Europa League win over Ajax and nearly took an early lead EFL
Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno kept out Carlos Baleba’s shot from range in the seventh minute and saved Simon Adingra’s effort inside the six-yard box moments later to keep it 0-0 EFL
Baleba was pulling the strings for Brighton as his vision and inch-perfect passes picked out the pacey Adingra, who enjoyed runs into space EFL
The hosts got the goal they deserved after 26 minutes EFL
Igor Julio drove the Seagulls up the pitch and when Ferguson retrieved the ball outside the box he showed excellent composure to slide the ball past Leno with his left foot into the bottom corner EFL
The goal highlighted a gulf in quality EFL between the two sides and the lethargic Cottagers were fortunate not to concede again immediately after the kick-off when their defence was caught napping by Adingra EFL
A rain-soaked Marco Silva cut a frustrated figure and his pleas to his Fulham players were left unanswered as Willian’s wasteful free-kick put an end to the first spell of meaningful possession the visitors had enjoyed in the Brighton half since the opening minutes EFL
Left-back Antonee Robinson was struggling to cope with Adingra and the American then gifted Ferguson a back pass, but the Seagulls’ goalscorer failed to double his tally when he was denied by Leno after 40 minutes EFL
Brighton started the second half quickly and Lewis Dunk was unfortunate not to score in the 49th minute EFL
The skipper lined up a set-piece and his side-footed effort dipped onto Leno’s crossbar EFL
Fulham made Brighton pay for their missed chances as they made it 1-1 in the 65th minute through Palhinha EFL
The visitors threw men forward in numbers and the Portugal international got the ball out of his feet on the edge of the box and blasted an effort past Jason Steele EFL
The goal swung the momentum in the Londoners’ favour and substitute Rodrigo Muniz nearly punished Brighton from the restart through an audacious back heel that was kept out by Steele EFL
Both teams had opportunities to win it with Robinson clearing an effort off the line before Harry Wilson came close to grabbing a winner at the other end EFL

England captain Jos Buttler took his share of the blame for a historically bad defeat against South Africa, accepting he made a mistake by fielding first in the oppressive heat and humidity of Mumbai EFL
Things could hardly have gone worse for the defending champions, whose World Cup campaign is rapidly disappearing over the cliff edge after three losses in four, with the Proteas running away with a 229-run win EFL
That was England’s heaviest ever defeat by run margin, while South Africa’s score of 399 for seven was a second undesired record EFL
The bowling was chaotic and expensive, the team selection brave but unsuccessful and the batting hopelessly underpowered by comparison to what came before it EFL
But all of it stemmed from Buttler’s decision to send the opposition in under fiercely exacting conditions, with the temperature peaking at 36 degrees and exacerbated by high humidity EFL
“I think you always reflect after games and question your decisions,” Buttler said EFL
“With hindsight, with the physicality of that innings, potentially batting first would have been a EFL better decision EFL
It’s a decision I took at the time EFL
I thought it was the right one and I still believe if we were chasing 340, 350, we would have done really well in those conditions EFL
“Physically it was a really demanding innings and, like I said, it makes you question maybe in those kind of conditions whether batting first may have been the right call at the toss EFL
”Buttler has had to front up after a hat-trick of unimpressive outings so far, with a nine-wicket hammering by New Zealand and a shock defeat at the hands of unfancied Afghanistan already on the ledger EFL
On each occasion he has aimed for an unemotional assessment but accepts England are now almost out of wriggle room, an awkward place to be with almost a month of travelling left and five group matches remaining EFL
“It certainly leaves us in a tough position EFL
There’s no room for error from here on in,” he acknowledged EFL
“It’s going to be incredibly difficult EFL
We haven’t left ourselves any margin from this point in EFL
But we’ll keep the belief EFL
We’ll sit down and go again EFL
That’s all you can do in this situation EFL
“I think it’s obvious that we’re not performing to our best EFL
It’s my job as captain, along with the rest of the team, to work out how we can get back to playing that brand of cricket, playing to our potential and getting back to our best EFL
“It certainly won’t be anyone giving up or having those kind of thoughts EFL
We’ll just have to dust ourselves down and stick our chests out and go again EFL
”Heinrich Klaasen celebrated an outstanding 109 in just 67 balls for South Africa and was also floored on several occasions by the same exacting circumstances which made it hard for England’s bowlers EFL
“I had to dig really, really deep there EFL
I didn’t have any energy left,” he said EFL
“My partner Marco (Jansen) played a big part of that EFL
He told me that he’s got me and that I’m not allowed to walk off the field if I don’t score 100 EFL
“It was like just breathing in hot air EFL
Every time you try to run it’s just sapping more and more energy and then at the end of the day your body just doesn’t want to work with you anymore EFL
It was just like almost running in a sauna for the whole innings EFL
“But you’ve got to dig deep for your country as well, I’ve worked my whole life for it, so it’s a great moment EFL
