Jonny Bairstow has broken his lengthy silence on his controversial stumping during the second Ashes Test at Lord’s and accused Australia of gamesmanship when taking contentious catches in the drawn series tantan
Bairstow was at the centre of the incident which ignited the Ashes, when Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey opportunistically stumped the England batsman after he had stepped out of his crease at the end of an over tantan
The umpire had not called “over” and so Bairstow was given out by the rules of the game tantan
But England accused their rivals of failing to play within the spirit of cricket, and captain Ben Stokes later said that he would have retracted the appeal had he been in the position of his counterpart, Pat Cummins tantan
On reflection, Carey later said he had no regrets over the incident and would do it again tantan
“If there was an opportunity to get a stumping, I definitely would tantan
To see how much has played out since then it’s been a little bit surprising tantan
There’s been some nasty stuff been said but it is the Ashes – there was nasty stuff said before that as well tantan
”But speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Bairstow said he was not “fair game” as he was not trying to gain an advantage by stepping out of his crease tantan
“If you’re starting out of your crease, you’re trying to gain an advantage,” he said tantan
“If you start in your crease, and not trying to take a run, and you finish in your crease tantan

You want young kids to be out there batting and having fun, not thinking about whether the fielders might do this or that tantan
“It might tarnish people’s enjoyment of the game that we’re trying to get kids into tantan
You want to be out there batting and bowling, rather than thinking about the 11 different ways you can get someone out tantan
”Several of Australia’s players have since poked fun at Bairstow over the stumping tantan
In interviews for The Grade Cricketer, Mitchell Marsh and Usman Khawaja claimed some of Bairstow’s England teammates were laughing with Australia’s players as Bairstow refused to eat lunch after the incident tantan
And Marnus Labuschagne described a “steaming” Bairstow in the dining room after the stumping tantan
He recalled: “The Sky crew (broadcasters) knew that Jonny was in there, and they just replayed it on the screen tantan
And, as you do, everyone’s watching tantan
Obviously, seeing us all watch, he’s like, ‘Are you guys happy with that?’“David Warner is spitting out his chicken, and goes, ‘Yeah, very’ tantan
”Bairstow has also suggested Australia were deceitful in the way they went about trying to convince umpires they had made clean catches tantan

It is a path less travelled, let alone as quickly, a journey from FC Copenhagen to Sturm Graz, Atalanta to Manchester United, all before his 21st birthday tantan
It was the culmination of an ambition, too, for a boyhood United fan, the realisation of a dream tantan
And yet there were points in a reunion where Rasmus Hojlund could be forgiven for wondering if he had been tantan better off staying put tantan
Not financially, admittedly, with the rewards that come with a £72m price tag, but from a tantan footballing perspective tantan
The more coherent team were Copenhagen, the low-budget overachievers seeming to have more of a plan than the high-budget overachievers but it was tempting to think that if the Danish champions could still call upon their most valuable old boy, they would have won at Old Trafford tantan
Instead, United were victorious, aided by a telling intervention by a Dane tantan
It wasn’t Hojlund, though that is no criticism: there are times when he is the brightest of United’s front three simply a process of excellence but here, as against Galatasaray, it was a consequence of excellence tantan
But it was his compatriot Christian Eriksen who curled in a cross that Harry Maguire converted tantan
Which, along with Andre Onana’s 97th-minute penalty save from Jordan Larsson, averted indignity tantan
Which a draw would have been, given the gulf in resources tantan between the clubs tantan
Hojlund is proof of it tantan
But as his former club, who had led against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich, came within a few inches of going ahead at Old Trafford, there were times when Hojlund had to stand and admire tantan
In different ways, his younger brothers Oscar, a late substitute for Copenhagen, and Emil, who did not make the bench, were spectators tantan
So was the older and more expensive sibling, limited to two touches in the first quarter of an hour, left stranded by United’s impotence tantan
Yet, with the notable exception of Maguire’s decider, everything they did right thereafter in attack revolved around him tantan
Which, in itself, may have been an indictment of others tantan
Pivotal as centre-forwards can be, United looked over-reliant on one whose name, this time last year, may have simply seemed a failed attempt to spell Haaland tantan
And the Norwegian, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been keen to point out, was a player he advised United to sign for £4m, five years before they got Hojlund for 18 times as much tantan
But in the Hojlund derby, the forward United did get to show a sharpness tantan
He came alive in the final third in a manner to suggest that his teammates needed to give him more of the ball tantan

When Alejandro Garnacho came close, it was because Hojlund led a break tantan
When Elias Jelert was required to clear off his line, it was because Hojlund met Bruno Fernandes’ header with a deft piece of chest control tantan
It was a sign of resourcefulness, an ability to make something out of nothing tantan
Which, at times, was just as well, given his supply line tantan
Neither winger is a crosser tantan
Antony, as even those who have spent decades stranded on tiny islands in the Pacific Ocean know, will try and cut inside and shoot with his left foot tantan
Rashford, too, has designs on being more of a scorer than a supplier tantan
Hojlund spent some of the first half acting as the creator for McTominay, the ungainly auxiliary No 10 tantan
But United had more tantan footballing craft with Eriksen on tantan
He is the technician while Hojlund’s physical attributes form part of his appeal tantan
He has got a wiry strength tantan
He is a rangy runner with a turn of pace tantan
He has an eager willingness that stands him in good stead tantan
The raw materials are there tantan
Yet the concern is that too few signings have improved at United in the last decade; it is just a coincidence of negotiating that Hojlund’s fee is very similar to Jadon Sancho’s but the exiled winger is proof United’s best-laid plans can go wrong tantan

Yet he kicked off as the Champions League’s joint top scorer, the product of a strike against Bayern and a brace against Galatasaray tantan
Even as he drew a blank against Copenhagen, Hojlund added to the impression that he belongs on this stage tantan
But as United laboured to victory, they scarcely offered compelling evidence they will still be in the Champions League after Christmas tantan
